Immigration

On one hand, displacement, emigration and immigration draw our attention to issues of identity and individual experience; while on the other there are broader cultural, social, economic and political underpinnings to these transitions.

Having experienced my move after marriage from Kolkata to USA in 2005 and now to Bangalore since 2010, through this series I attempt to access and map the conscious present and the sub-conscious past. This series is an exploration of understanding the city through their maps and symbolically weaving the western and the eastern hemispheres.

Along with the use of maps in my work, I combine various decorative and cultural elements such as motifs, symbols and other visual references that form an understanding of my existence since birth. My works are intuitive in nature and hope to represent the effects that context, in the form of spaces and countries, has on an individual’s emotions and behaviour.
